#1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, week of 1/7/17
What it is: The fifth studio album from five-member a cappella group Pentatonix, and their second holiday album after 2014’s That’s Christmas to Me.
I knew going in that this was an a cappella holiday album and still wasn’t prepared for how goofy much of it is. Pentatonix have a modern, hip-hop-inflected sound, so a lot of this record sounds like a Christmas-themed production of The Lion King as written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. They do traditional songs like “O Come, All Ye Faithful” but have some modern covers as well, which are a mixed bag: Kanye West’s “Coldest Winter” is a fun selection, but Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” ain’t a Christmas song, guys. Please don’t try to make that happen.
