#1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, week of 12/3/16
What it is: The sixth album from venerable alternative hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest, their first since 1998. Scattered with contributions from guests such as Busta Rhymes, Kendrick Lamar, Andre 3000, Kanye West and Jack White. Group member Phife Dawg passed away in March.
After Frank Ocean’s Blonde and Solange’s A Seat at the Table, We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service confirms that socially conscious black musicians are creating the best pop records, and maybe the best American pop culture generally, of the current moment. This album’s lyrics obviously engage with today’s political and social climate (“All you Black folks, you must go/All you Mexicans, you must go”), but the project is just as restlessly creative on a musical level, from the thundering drums of “We The People….” to the ominous guitar on “Ego.” Confident, contemporary while remaining true to the group’s roots, stuffed with ideas; this is exactly the album you could’ve hoped for if you’re a Tribe fan, or just someone who wants to see the mainstream maintain an appetite for vibrantly off-beat work.
